VGM-style works
Area themes
A dungeon theme inspired by the unconventional harmonic structures and instrumentation in the works of Keisuke Ito from the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. A quirky and adventurous track in odd time signatures, balanced with something more serious. The light jaunty feel of the main sections represents soaring energy — 'Skybound', while the dark breakdown towards the end of the loop represents the remains of a lost civilisation — 'Ruins'.
An overworld theme for a blizzarding island setting. According to the client, "Snowfield Island is an isolated northern location, adorned with ancient ruins and occasionally struck by violent blizzards. Snowfield also houses a passage to Lugia’s domain, and is enshrouded in a veil of mystery." The piece calls for adventure with a grand orchestral palette, while expressing cold emptiness and mystery in the piano, bells, and shanai-like instrument.
Character themes
A character theme inspired by the works of Yasumasa Kitagawa on the soundtrack of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. Written for an original character related to an existing character in the series described as “cheerful but hiding a lof of sadness”. The request for the theme called for an orchestral palette, with bells and harpsichord as prominent instruments.
A character/cutscene theme, taking notes from Arata Iiyoshi and Keisuke Ito’s work on the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, in particular the "Heartwarming" and "Time to Set Out" themes, respectively. Following this inspiration, the piece has a light folksy feel that develops into a grander orchestration to convey an arc for a character that moves between hesitance and heroism.
Battle themes
A drum ‘n’ bass style battle theme against Mari-p0ser, a cheerful DnB DJ with a butterfly motif in her design. The ostinato figure in the harp, with its up-and-down movement mimics the majesty of a butterfly’s wings. The character's DJ persona is referenced using scratchy FX, and the choppiness in the breakdown towards the end of the loop. This also ties in with Mari-p0ser's mechanical legs going haywire as the battle moves on.
A battle against Argent Vendell-Regor, a pirate who is a beetle centaur with locust wings. The client requested a fast and ominous feeling, using the fiddle as a lead instrument. The accordion was used to duet the violin representing the two sides of Argent being a beetle centaur, with the buzzy timbre reminiscent of cicadas and locusts. The latter section adds a bit more determination and emotional quality reflecting perseverance.
Other commissioned works
An intro stinger and background looping track commissioned by Firetail Events, an Australian-based group that hosts esports events, with a focus on Splatoon 2. It was used for livestreams related to the Firetail League, an unofficial Splatoon 2 draft league.
The track features a blended orchestral and EDM palette to create a triumphant feeling for the tournament to excite players and viewers alike.
A special project created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Suzanne Cory High School, a co-educational selective-entry government school founded in 2011, based in Werribee. Originally, an exciting track was prepared, to tie in with the many events that were planned for the celebration during 2021, however, these were ultimately cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. As a result, alternative measures to create a product had to be taken, and the focus of the project shifted to a more stripped-back retrospective.
The music track uses a lo-fi beats style, featuring field recordings and soft melodies that use motifs from the SCHS school song. The visuals, provided by dewream, superimpose animated characters on top of limited-motion shots of the campus.
In Housewarming, an excitable fire spirit moves to a swamp and tries to invite the local animals to its housewarming party in the hopes of making some friends, but it keeps setting things on fire and scaring them away.
The score expresses a balance between the quirky and ethereal feeling of the short. A limited orchestral palette in combination with the mandolin is used to highlight the fantastical setting, and several motifs are established to outline the arc of the story, from excitement, to disappointment, to solace.
The animated short remains unfinished, however, the score has been finalised.
Personal projects
“A step taken in the rain, a step taken by the rain. We all try to make the right steps and make missteps along the way, but two steps forward and one step back is still a step taken. And much like a puddle is to the rain, our steps are our own fleeting mark upon the world.”
Puddle is an indie orchestral fusion piece about moving steadily through life and learning to reflect along the way.
“The start of your journey, the origin stop. Wait patiently as trains come and go, taking passengers to their destinations. Your train will arrive in due time, so sit and listen to your surroundings and take life as it comes.”
Stationary combines field recording with musical material, to convey the feeling of waiting. The harmony is comprised of quartal and quintal intervals, avoiding strong harmonic movement, reflecting the state of patience initiated by uncontrollable forces. The piece uses self-collected samples from Melbourne train stations to immerse listeners into a public transport environment.
“Break free from the grid!”
grid combines simple repeating lines with household textures to create a fun and uplifting dance track. The track uses rigid rhythms accompanied by a soaring synth line, and also samples household objects. Written early in the COVID-19 pandemic, this piece was to have an uplifting message, to find a way to break free whenever you're feeling stuck or claustrophobic.
